Yr 12 Engineers visit Rail Live

Sixth Form

25 June 2021

For their work with Network Rail, the Year 12 engineering team have been tasked with developing a system for monitoring wear on the overhead electrical cables and over the course of the past year, have been looking into possible solutions, working closely with their mentor from the organisation.

As a part of the project, the team were invited to attend Rail Live, the rail industry’s largest exhibition. The show brings together professionals from all areas related to the rail industry and is an opportunity to see their latest innovations.

"After a walk around the stands, meeting engineers, discussing their project (and collecting as many freebies as we could carry) we were given the opportunity to board the prototype hydrogen train, the next step in making our railways more environmentally-friendly. We crossed the line on a brand new footbridge made of recycled plastic - constructed in just 11 weeks - to reach our final stop, the New Measurement Train (or ‘Flying Banana’). We were given a tour of the train and shown the multitude of tests and measurements it can make on the railways all while travelling at over 100mph. Something rail users never get to see! As an added bonus, we even got to chat to a Formula 1 sidecar and have a look at their amazing kit.

"The team would like to send a big thank you to Chris, our mentor, and his colleagues for this exclusive opportunity."
