Valuable Field Experience for Geographers

Sixth Form

18 March 2022

Last week, the Year 12 Geographers were in Swanage conducting fieldwork for their NEA field skills. The girls were expertly led by fieldwork coordinator Barry Cullimore and for the most part we had lovely weather during our mini-break from school.

After a long day on the Monday, following a full school day and drive down to the Youth Hostel, Tuesday morning began with a walk to Durlston Country Park where the girls undertook a series of small investigations looking into the carbon and water cycles. This included measuring the height of trees and the saturation rate of the soil in different locations. Whilst taking a coastal path walk, we were also able to see the spectacular views of the Dorset coastline, including Old Harry Rocks.

On Wednesday, we drove to Studland Knoll Beach to study the sand dunes, analysing factors such as plant types, wind speed and dune height. Although the coast was very breezy, the girls were able to enjoy a bit of sunshine and lunch on the beach front.

We spent the day in Poole on Thursday, collecting data on inequalities within the area and considering how successful areas of Poole have been with regeneration. The girls were very mature and sensible in their approach to questioning the public.

On our final morning, the girls conducted short, mini enquiries locally in Swanage before our drive back to school. Although we may have got soaked in the rain, the girls were able to put into practice what they had learnt in the week and these skills will be vital for when they come to complete their Year 13 NEA independent investigations next year.

Amelia, Charlotte, Anna, Diya and Abbie were all a credit to the school and a pleasure to spend the week with. Thank you girls.
