Geography in Action

Preparatory

15 October 2021

There has been a focus on map work in the Prep School this week in a number of year groups.

On Monday, Year 1 went for a walk around Chad Square to support their work in Geography. They were asked to be detectives and try to spot different types of houses and street furniture in their local environment. The girls saw detached and semi detached houses as well as counting how many doors there were on a row of terraced houses. They also used their counting skills to see how many floors there were on the flats on Richmond Hill Road. As street detectives, they spotted lots of street furniture on their adventure too. Fortunately the weather was kind and they had beautiful sunshine for their walk.

Year 2 girls have been developing their mapping skills too by making their own compass. Firstly using 4 compass points they learnt some mnemonics, such as Naughty, Elephants, Squirt, Water to help them remember the order of NESW and even made up some of their own. They then extended their skills further by learning about 8 compass points. The compasses were put to work and helped Katie Morag, a book character, to deliver the mail around her island home, Struay.

As part of their Geography work on maps and plans Year 3 pupils annotated a map of our school, adding labels to identify different areas. They then went on a class tour to discover whether their predictions were correct.

Each week in Year 6 the girls take turns in Geography to present a themed two-minute talk. Girls can select a topic of their choice and this week they enjoyed excellent talks on The Ozone Layer and Tsunamis.
