Learning in the Field
15 March 2024
It was with excitement that Year 12 Geographers embarked on a residential trip to North Wales to begin work on their NEA investigations.
On the first day of the trip, the girls stopped off in Shrewsbury to investigate if the town had a need for urban regeneration. Data collection included clone town surveys, environmental quality surveys, land use surveys and questionnaires. At lunch, the girls explored the range of cuisines on offer in Shrewsbury and settled on a South-East Asian banquet! Miss Leason also came along to surprise the girls before they headed off to Wales.
The group headed to the AirBnB in Porthmadog and evaluated their fieldwork methods, suggesting ways in which the data could be analysed and used in their own investigations. Later in the evening, the girls headed to the neighbouring town of Criccieth for dinner at the sea-front restaurant, Dylan’s. A thrilling game of Mafia followed, led by Mrs Egan.
The next day, undeterred by brisk coastal winds, the group headed back to Criccieth to carry out their coastal geography fieldwork techniques. From sediment sampling to beach profiles, Hudson’s equation and flood risk analyses, the group navigated through an assortment of methodologies, enriching their understanding of coastal dynamics. In the evening, the girls warmed up with nachos and fajitas cooked by Mrs Griffiths and Miss Massey. The evening ended with a competitive yet enjoyable game of Articulate.
On the last morning, the girls completed the Barmouth Bridge walk, taking in the views over the Mawddach estuary, followed by curly fries in a local cafe. The girls thoroughly
enjoyed their trip and are eager to get started on their own investigations in the Summer Term.
