Mathematicians Mark Pi Day

Senior School | Sixth Form

18 March 2022

Senior School mathematicians joined thousands of others in celebrating World Pi Day on Monday. An event that is marked by mathematicians around the world, March 14 (or 3/14) is celebrated as Pi Day because 3.14 are the first digits of pi.

Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 had made bunting to decorate the corridors while pupils in Years 10 and 11 investigated circle theorems. Efforts were rewarded at lunchtime when all pupils enjoyed a slice of pie.

Although Pi is typically rounded up to 3.14, it can go on forever and there have been countless calculations and recalculations undertaken over the years. According to Guinness World Records, the most accurate value for Pi is more than 62 trillion digits (62,831,853,071,796 to be precise)!

Congratulations therefore go to Sixth Form Mathematician Gracie Herbert who won our Pi Day competition to recite Pi from memory, managing 84 digits of Pi! Incredible!
