We ended last term in lovely sunshine which brought the Easter Bunny out of hiding to visit the girls in Westbourne. They were delighted that there were also gifts of chocolate eggs.
It has been good to start this new term in spring sunshine too. This has been especially important for our Year 4 girls who have just returned from their first residential trip experience. They really enjoyed the challenges and will report further to us next week.
Our start of term assemblies have echoed the Culture Day which we celebrated last term. We have been thinking about our roles and responsibilities as global citizens and the contribution we can each make. EHS extended families can be found all over the world which gives us many opportunities to learn about other cultures. We continued this theme as we marked Earth Day last Friday by considering how we can help the environment.
Westbourne have been joining in too as Reception girls have been learning about Kenya whilst enjoying reading and writing about Handa’s Surprise, the popular children’s story.
A surprise visit from Perry, the Commonwealth mascot added further to our understanding of respect for other people from across the globe. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to Birmingham and seeing all of the different sports that Perry demonstrated.
Girls have been busy in the classroom too. Year 2 have been growing cress to identify the conditions they need to grow healthily. The girls all predicted that the cress would need water and light. They've also been writing a diary to show how a broad bean grows from a seed into a plant. The girls have loved seeing the daily changes to the growing beans and it has definitely been a highlight. We are so impressed as two of our beans have grown over 30cm in 15 days, that's a record for Year 2!
Year 3 enjoyed a live lesson from the Arctic as part of their Geography topic on The Polar Regions. They met Jamie, an Arctic scientist. He showed them how he has to wear twenty layers of clothes to brave the -40 degree Celsius temperatures. He took them on a live tour of his base, inside and outside. The girls asked him questions about his job in the Arctic.
Year 5 and 6 girls are looking forward to their residential trips in the coming weeks and Year 6 are enjoying their enrichment activities. They have many experiences to look forward to as they extend their skills beyond the curriculum before making the next step to senior schools.
Outside of the classroom Years 1 and 2 have enjoyed some cricket sessions from the All Stars cricket coaches and Year 6 have developed their cycling through the Bikeability sessions. Our musicians who play in a number of school ensembles had the opportunity to join Senior School musicians in a whole school concert this week. We enjoyed performances from our two choirs, Guitar, String and Flute Groups and from prep Orchestra. The concert ended with everyone singing the school song which we have not heard together for such a long time.
Our week has ended with our celebration Assembly during which we congratulated Izzy Poade on achieving her Grade 5 Violin with merit and Supreeta Kalsi Jogi for her Independent Learning contribution and for generously donating her hair to Little Princess Trust to support children who affected by hair loss. Well done girls!
We hope that everyone enjoys the Bank Holiday on Monday and that our families marking Eid enjoy gathering together for their celebrations.
