Prep's Drone Pilots
21 June 2024
Our Year 6 students took part in an exciting enrichment activity this week where they delved into the world of drones and coding. This hands-on experience not only introduced them to the fascinating technology behind drones but also highlighted the importance of transferable skills such as mathematics and problem-solving.
Building on the foundational coding work from their computing lessons, the activity began with an engaging session on the various applications of drones in the real world. The girls learned how drones are used in fields ranging from agriculture and environmental monitoring to search and rescue operations. This broadened their understanding of the practical implications of technology and inspired them to think about future career possibilities.
With a solid understanding of drone applications, the pupils moved on to the coding segment. Using coding platforms, they wrote programs to control the drones. They learned to make the drones fly forward, backward, and even perform flips. The girls also experimented with the drones' cameras, coding them to capture aerial photos and videos from different angles.
Mathematics played a crucial role throughout the activity. The students applied geometric concepts to create different flight patterns and shapes, such as squares and triangles, ensuring precise movements and angles. They also used algorithms to repeat sequences of commands, enhancing their logical thinking and computational skills.
This enrichment activity was not only about learning to code and fly drones but also about fostering critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. The girls worked in teams, solving problems and debugging their code, which reinforced their communication and teamwork abilities.
Overall, this enriching experience has equipped our Year 6 students with valuable skills that extend beyond the classroom. By integrating technology and real-world applications, we aim to inspire our students to pursue their interests in STEM and become innovative thinkers of the future.
